Completing your TV Diary
Follow these steps to make your household’s viewing count!
If you have received one diary, use that diary to write in the viewing for all sets.
If you have received multiple diaries, use one for each TV in your home.
Please begin by answering all questions in step 1 of the diary. We appreciate you filling out this step for all Diaries you received.
These questions are important to help ensure the viewing for your household is accurately reported in the ratings. The answers to your demographic questions give us insight into people like you.
Please note that for this survey, Hispanic/Latino/Spanish is considered an ethnic origin, not a race.
For each TV set in your household, please attach a list or write in the local channels each TV receives.
Station call letters usually consist of four letters that begin with W or K. You can find these station call letters on your TV guide or in a newspaper. For some service providers, this information can be found by pushing the “info” or “guide” buttons on your remote control.
Also, please complete step 2 in each diary you receive.
Record information for each person watching TV in your household. For all household members please include:
-Number of Hours Worked
Include any visitors who watch TV in your home by writing “visitor” for first name. Also include age and gender for the visitor. If age is not known for a visitor, please provide your best guess.
A. In columns 1 and 2
Write the names of the male and female heads of house. If your home does not have a male and/or female head of house, please see the FAQ page for further instructions.
B. In the remaining columns
Write the names of other household members. For a visitor, simply write in the word “visitor.”
Follow these simple five-step instructions to log your daily TV viewing.
When you watch a TV channel for 5 minutes or more, select the day and time you are watching. If you switch channels, you could watch three shows within a fifteen minute (quarter-hour) time period. Please write in any program you watch for 5 or more minutes.
Use this column to indicate when the TV is on or off. To indicate how long the set is turned on, mark an "X" and draw a line down for the appropriate time.
Please write in the broadcast station or network the program is being watched on. For broadcast stations, please write the station's call letters, which usually consist of four letters that begin with W or K. If you don't know the call letters, refer to a newspaper or TV guide, or write the network the station is affiliated with. For a cable network, please write the name or an abbreviation of the name.
When making entries in the "Chan. No." column, please write in the channel number you enter on your TV to select the station. Draw a line down under the station name and channel number to indicate the length of time the channel was watched.
Enter the name of the program being watched. Draw a vertical line down under the name to indicate the length of time the program is being watched. If you don't know the name of the program, refer to a newspaper program listing or TV guide. For some service providers, this information can be found by pushing the "info" or "guide" buttons on your remote control.
Let us know who watched or listened to the program by putting an "X" in the columns for the household members or visitors who are watching. Draw lines down under each name to indicate how long the program was watched.
Note: If the TV is on and no one is watching, put an "X" in the column for "TV on but no one Watching/Listening" and draw a line down indicating how long the TV was on.
When you are finished recording your viewing for the diary keeping week, please mail back ALL TV diaries you received. Regardless of how many or how few programs are entered, each is important!
There are two simple steps required to mail the diary back:
First, open the back flap to use the adhesive on the bottom.
Then, moisten the flap on the back cover of the diary. Fold it over your address on the front cover and then seal it. Your completed diary will look like this.
Drop the diary in the mail. The postage is prepaid. Thank you for participating! Your household's TV viewing will now be included in the Nielsen TV Ratings.
